BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Soon North Baton Rouge could see a major facelift in three different neighborhoods. It’s called the BR Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan.
In July 2024, President Biden along with acting HUD Secretary Adrianne Todman announced the recent $2.5 million grant awarded to the East Baton Rouge Housing Authority (EBRPHA). These funds along with previously awarded money will aid in restoring communities between Florida Boulevard and Greenwell Springs Road.
“I think it’s really identifying the least invested,” said J. Wesley Daniels Jr., CEO at the East Baton Rouge Parish Housing Authority. “Over the past 20 years, there are certain neighborhoods that really scream out for redevelopment. Just because they’ve been disinvested over decades.”
Daniels said these neighborhoods represent an opportunity to transform them into resilient and thriving communities, improving education opportunities and more businesses.
“Education is the way we combat poverty. And so what we created through our MOVEBR project is an educational spine,” said Daniels.
Along with new buildings comes new art said Daniels. There are murals alongside new buildings in these redeveloped areas to show the art, culture, and creativity of Louisiana.
EBRPHA is also partnering with the city-parish, Louisiana Housing Corporation, and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation among others.
